Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production
Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production
WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) certification is the world's largest independent program for the apparel and sewn products industry, verifying that a manufacturing facility is operating in a safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manner. It is achieved after a rigorous independent audit confirms compliance with the 12 WRAP Principles, ensuring fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and environmental responsibility, thereby providing global brands with assurance of a socially compliant supply chain.
WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production) is the world's largest independent, non-profit certification program focused on ensuring safe, lawful, humane, and ethical manufacturing globally. While it is primarily focused on the apparel, footwear, and sewn products sectors, its principles are comprehensive standards for social compliance.
The goal of WRAP certification is to confirm, through rigorous third-party auditing, that a production facility adheres to globally accepted social compliance standards. Achieving certification (Silver, Gold, or Platinum) signals to global brands and consumers that the products are made under transparent and responsible conditions.
The WRAP Principles are based on the local laws of each country, generally accepted international workplace standards, and the spirit of relevant International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions. They cover four main areas:
1. Compliance with Laws
Facilities must obey all applicable laws and regulations in their jurisdiction, including labor, environmental, and customs laws.
2. Prohibition of Forced Labor
Employment must be voluntary. The facility must not use forced, prison, indentured, bonded, or trafficked labor, and workers must retain control of their personal documents (e.g., ID, passport).
3. Prohibition of Child Labor
Facilities must adhere to the minimum working age set by local law and international standards, ensuring young workers are not exposed to hazardous work or interference with their education.
4. Prohibition of Harassment or Abuse
Workers must be treated with dignity and respect. The use of physical abuse, harassment, sexual coercion, or verbal abuse is strictly forbidden.
5. Compensation and Benefits
Facilities must pay wages, including for overtime, and provide benefits that meet or exceed the legal minimums and contractual obligations.
6. Hours of Work
Working hours must comply with local laws and provide for at least one day off in every seven-day period. Overtime must be voluntary and compensated appropriately.
7. Prohibition of Discrimination
Employment decisions (hiring, firing, pay, promotion) must be based solely on ability and not on personal characteristics like race, gender, religion, or age.
8. Freedom of Association & Collective Bargaining
Workers' rights to form, join, or not join a union and bargain collectively must be recognized and respected, without fear of retaliation.
9. Health and Safety
A safe, clean, and healthy work environment must be provided, prioritizing worker safety above all else. This includes clean drinking water, adequate lighting, and proper emergency preparedness (e.g., fire exits).
10. Environment
Facilities must comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations concerning waste management, emissions, and other environmental impacts.
11. Customs Compliance
Facilities must maintain accurate records and procedures to ensure that goods are processed and shipped in accordance with customs laws.
12. Security
Facilities must have security procedures to prevent the introduction of non-manifested cargo (e.g., drugs, bombs, illegal materials) into shipments, ensuring supply chain integrity.
